The harvest has begun in almost all of Italy. Despite the difficulties linked to extreme weather events and plant health issues, from north to south of the peninsula there is broad optimism among producers about a harvest able to reverse the negative trend of recent vintages and deliver on both quality and quantity. Naturally, some areas have suffered — the south from drought, the north from excess rainfall that encouraged fungal diseases. Even so, the reports coming from many quarters are encouraging.
Quality despite the challenges: In the Oltrepò Pavese, for example, this harvest is shaping up to be all about quality. Despite a roughly 30% drop in yields, caused by a particularly rainy spring and early summer, the quality of the grapes promises high-level wines.
A promising outlook: According to producers (25 million bottles in 2023) and the local Consortium, the sparkling wine base wines — Pinot Nero in particular — are already showing characteristics that point to an important vintage for the metodo classico.
Resilience strategies: In such a complex year, it’s clear to industry operators that it’s essential not only to focus on product quality, but also to strengthen the supply chain as a whole. The goals are to consolidate a more industrial, managerial approach, oriented towards markets and efficient cost management.
Future and sustainability: Attention is also focused on the competitiveness and economic sustainability of producers, especially in a context marked by climate and plant health difficulties. With this in mind, the Consortium has opened a dialogue with the Lombardy Region to identify support and compensation measures aimed at protecting the hardest-hit businesses.
The 2024 harvest looks set to be a year of challenges, but also of opportunities, for the Italian wine sector. Focusing on quality, efficiency and resilience will be the key to overcoming difficulties and continuing to produce wines that represent the very best of the territory.
